The current government in Quebec took advantage of COVID to enact legislation to protect the French language in Quebec. However, the contention was that in order to further protect French, English had to suffer. While several in the government found the legislation moderate, English-speaking Quebecers (and even many French speakers) found the moves autocratic and alienating the English community.
