Honoring Sacrifice: Reflecting on Veterans' Legacy and Modern Disconnect
Show Notes
Did you know that the freedoms we often take for granted come with a price that many of us never had to pay? Join us as we reflect on the profound sacrifices made by veterans of World War I, II and beyond. Through poignant stories and a critical look at today's global events, we explore the disconnect between modern generations and the harsh realities faced by those who fought for our liberties. The poppy, a powerful symbol of remembrance, serves as a reminder of the courage and valor of those who served. We urge a renewed appreciation for veterans, especially as the number of living World War II veterans diminishes.
00:00:02.084 --> 00:00:13.051 You know, today is what we call Armistice Day, as it was called post-World War I, where we spent the day honoring those that served in the First World War.
00:00:13.051 --> 00:00:22.283 Later, after World War II, it became Veterans Day, a day that we recognize everyone that served this great country.
00:00:22.283 --> 00:00:28.361 It also became a very special day in Canada Day, november 11th.
00:00:28.361 --> 00:00:40.093 At 11 o'clock, at 11 am, they take a moment of silence and normally British or Commonwealth recognize the holiday by wearing a poppy.
00:00:40.093 --> 00:01:01.472 I remember my late mother always every year donating money and getting a new poppy, and she would cover over years and years every single jacket that she would wear pretty much the week before this day with a poppy, and I think today the world has just gone bananas.
00:01:01.472 --> 00:01:02.603 Let's see about that.
00:01:02.603 --> 00:01:03.006 Welcome everybody.
00:01:03.026 --> 00:01:04.091 This is the Rant Network that's my co-host, david.
00:01:04.091 --> 00:01:15.253 This is the Rant Network that's my co-host, david Solomon, wearing a collared shirt where we're bringing you unfiltered, uncensored conversation on a wide range of topics like this poppies, veterans Day.
00:01:15.253 --> 00:01:23.828 Our podcast is dedicated to giving a platform expressing opinion, thoughts, ideas, experiences from every perspective known to man.
00:01:23.828 --> 00:01:28.349 We normally call that a variety and it's definitely what we call an honest opinion.
00:01:28.349 --> 00:01:42.707 We're going to dive into this issue as we do news, pop culture, politics and so much more, from rants of absurdity in modern life to discussions about deeper, deeper issues like this one that David's going to roll out into.
00:01:42.707 --> 00:01:50.530 So sit back, relax and join us on this discovery this Veterans Day, november 11th 2024.
00:01:50.530 --> 00:01:51.052 David.
00:01:52.081 --> 00:01:57.790 You know, americans call it Veterans Day and, as you said so appropriately, stuart, we in Canada refer to it as Remembrance Day.
00:01:57.790 --> 00:02:11.705 It's a day that we should not remember only once a year but, unfortunately, into modern age, today, this day is viewed like all other days, it's taken for granted.
00:02:11.705 --> 00:02:14.268 Now, listen, I'm born and raised in Canada.
00:02:14.268 --> 00:02:26.401 I know you were born in the United States, stuart, and our freedoms, our opportunities would not be here if it had not been for the sacrifices made by the generations before us.
00:02:26.401 --> 00:02:33.093 World War I listen as Canadians we went into the war well before the Americans did.
00:02:33.093 --> 00:02:41.622 We lost incredible amount of people to fight a stupid war Not that anywhere is really smart, but there was a stupid war.
00:02:41.622 --> 00:02:46.301 But World War II was really the catalyst for where we are today.
00:02:46.883 --> 00:02:52.114 World War II was literally the fight between freedom and an autocratic rule.
00:02:52.114 --> 00:03:02.728 Let me remind everybody World War II, simply put, starting September 1st 1939, when Germany officially invaded Poland, the world went to war.
00:03:02.728 --> 00:03:04.651 The US took two more years to join.
00:03:04.651 --> 00:03:07.596 Invaded Poland, the world went to war.
00:03:07.596 --> 00:03:17.062 The US took two more years to join, but Canadians French, you name it sacrificed to the death to preserve freedom.
00:03:17.062 --> 00:03:24.474 The idea back then for Adolf Hitler, for Mussolini, Japan and the rest was to take away democracy, take away our freedoms.
00:03:24.474 --> 00:03:30.502 To take away democracy, take away our freedoms.
00:03:30.502 --> 00:03:37.540 Millions perished, millions and millions perished in that war Civilians, soldiers, you name it and what came out of it was a Cold War, stuart, you know it.
00:03:37.540 --> 00:03:38.862 Right after that, we continue that.
00:03:38.862 --> 00:03:44.170 But had it not been for the United States and our allies coming in, where would we be today?
00:03:44.170 --> 00:03:51.146 Where would we be today, 85 years after the start of World War II?
00:03:51.206 --> 00:03:54.040 We have generations of people who have no idea what war is all about.
00:03:54.040 --> 00:03:58.050 Look in the university store September 11th 2001.
00:03:58.050 --> 00:04:00.802 They don't even remember, and we mentioned this in a previous rant.
00:04:00.802 --> 00:04:06.133 We've got generations of kids who have no idea what threat was all about.
00:04:06.133 --> 00:04:10.871 You and I have talked about, you know, the threat of the Cold War when we were kids.
00:04:10.871 --> 00:04:16.127 We've talked about all these things and we knew back then.
00:04:16.127 --> 00:04:22.326 Even then there was always this chance the Soviets would fire and we would be perished.
00:04:23.427 --> 00:04:28.055 The sacrifices made by these soldiers, veterans, you name it.
00:04:28.055 --> 00:04:29.865 We don't honor them enough.
00:04:29.865 --> 00:04:33.310 The World War I veterans they're no longer alive, unfortunately.
00:04:33.310 --> 00:04:37.089 And the World War II veterans, few and far are alive.
00:04:37.089 --> 00:04:39.745 So it just shows you that we can't.
00:04:39.745 --> 00:04:45.690 Even their stories, their sacrifices are only going to be anecdotal in history books.
00:04:45.690 --> 00:04:50.610 Generations continue to take for granted what they have today.
00:04:50.610 --> 00:05:10.425 And when you see since October 7th 2023, the statements made by Americans, canadians, westerners, you have to ask yourself why are you not understanding why this sacrifice is what were made were so critical?
00:05:11.408 --> 00:05:19.307 Would you like to live in a place where by the way Stuart I don't know if you heard the age of consent now in Iraq for girls is nine years old?
00:05:19.307 --> 00:05:26.129 Could you imagine that, nine years old, you want to live in a society like that, with that kind of rule?
00:05:26.129 --> 00:05:27.761 Or how about?
00:05:27.761 --> 00:05:33.348 Would you like to live in an area where, if you are not of a certain religion, you'd be slaughtered?
00:05:33.348 --> 00:05:46.065 How would you like to live in a state where, whenever you talk about the government negatively, ie Russia, somehow you disappear, you're poisoned, you're eliminated?
00:05:46.065 --> 00:05:49.076 Is this what you want to live in?
00:05:49.810 --> 00:05:59.985 Because the people before you, the generations of veterans before you, who sacrificed their lives to give you the opportunity to make choices, they did that for you.
00:06:01.211 --> 00:06:16.499 They gave you the opportunity to become anything you want to do, whatever, almost whatever you want to say, almost whatever you want, and you're taking that for granted and I'm sitting here in a very lecture-like condemnation, stuart, and it saddens me.
00:06:16.499 --> 00:06:30.961 I'm not going to get into the story behind the poppy and where it came from, from Flanders Field and what have you but this is the memory, this is the symbol that we carry with us outside of the US to remind people.
00:06:30.961 --> 00:06:44.516 And it bothers me that when I see veterans of wars standing there, older people and asking for help it's just whatever you want and young people walking away say I'm not interested.
00:06:44.516 --> 00:06:49.894 I'm not interested in hearing your sacrifice, I'm not interested in hearing what you did for me.
00:06:49.894 --> 00:06:52.802 I'm just going to take it for granted, stuart.
00:06:52.802 --> 00:07:00.838 That sickens me and I'm sorry to say that on a day like today, we should honor those, we should remember them lest we forget.
00:07:00.838 --> 00:07:03.862 Stuart, we can't hear you.
00:07:03.882 --> 00:07:07.490 You're kidding me Again.
00:07:07.490 --> 00:07:07.992 Can you hear me?
00:07:07.992 --> 00:07:08.875 We can hear you.
00:07:08.875 --> 00:07:13.490 All right, let me switch audios Now.
00:07:13.490 --> 00:07:14.072 Can you hear me?
00:07:14.072 --> 00:07:26.571 Go ahead, Okay, go ahead, okay.
00:07:26.571 --> 00:07:29.420 I took this picture in 1987 on the front lawn of 84 woodlawn drive.
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:54.213 And the reason why I put it up is because that picture I entered into contest after contest, because it actually is a black and white and a painted poppy, which back in the day of before there was video editing that was taken with a Minolta camera and film, and again, that was a poppy that I pilfed off of my mother's jacket.
00:07:54.213 --> 00:08:06.487 So I had one too and I'm sorry for bringing it up, but it was a memory that was clearly in my Facebook because I've loaded it many, many, many times.
00:08:06.487 --> 00:08:14.377 I am perplexed why there are private schools that have school today.
00:08:14.377 --> 00:08:21.923 I'm perplexed why there are businesses that are open today.
00:08:21.923 --> 00:08:41.673 And it bothers me to no end that there's not enough thanks for where we have gotten and how we have gotten here, and I don't believe that the school system to date has done these kids, these young adults, right.
00:08:41.673 --> 00:08:42.739 You're right.
00:08:42.739 --> 00:08:46.620 Your kids probably barely remember September 11th.
00:08:46.620 --> 00:08:54.780 My kids definitely don't remember September 11th and they are not learning about it in school enough.
00:08:55.711 --> 00:09:14.283 And I don't think there are enough veterans welcome in schools to today that there should be every single week of Remembrance Day and it is Remembrance Day, david, and I apologize just calling it Veterans Day, I guess for the years in the United States, but it was Armistice Day before.
00:09:14.283 --> 00:09:20.865 It was Remembrance Day and everyone around the world celebrated or acknowledged this day.
00:09:20.865 --> 00:09:41.880 I can only wish for those that have served and those families that have given the greatest sacrifice of all someone they love, so that you can be a woke, stupid idiot, so that you can be free to say what you want, do what you want in a country that allows you to do so.
00:09:41.880 --> 00:09:48.664 And, as David, as you so nicely pointed out that nine-year-olds are now the age of majority in some countries.
00:09:48.664 --> 00:09:51.210 That is absolutely insane.
00:09:51.671 --> 00:10:10.331 You know, with the current president, the left is going on its head saying how Biden should appoint step down and appoint Kamala as president and appoint Liz Cheney as vice president, as they rattled off on CNN literally today.
00:10:10.331 --> 00:10:16.332 This is their new, bright answer to getting a shellacking around the world.
00:10:16.332 --> 00:10:27.913 Why can't the noise of the people convince those that there is another way other than that way?
00:10:27.913 --> 00:10:30.096 Because the world doesn't want it.
00:10:30.096 --> 00:10:54.429 There is a turnaround in every election around, and the United States has just sent a warning glass to the world that Donald Trump's back in office and those that have lost their lives will be remembered, celebrated and acknowledged as they should Again today.
00:10:54.429 --> 00:11:13.517 I think they're all going to the tomb of the unknown soldiers and they're going to lay reefs, and I hope the schools that are there today in class and in session turn on the TV at 11 o'clock, at 11 minutes 11 seconds, and take a moment of silence.
00:11:13.517 --> 00:11:15.464 These kids got to know.
00:11:15.464 --> 00:11:16.966 David, I'm sorry.
00:11:16.966 --> 00:11:18.731 No, there's no sorry.
00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:23.408 What you brought up is a really good point is a really good point the schools.
00:11:23.408 --> 00:11:31.528 Unfortunately, we're not teaching them because we have teachers and educators and politicians who are this so-called anti-war.
00:11:31.528 --> 00:11:33.826 We're promoting war.
00:11:33.826 --> 00:11:35.826 We're not promoting war.
00:11:35.826 --> 00:11:48.210 There's bad and good and we saw it historically that when evil gets a chance to rise, good must do something about it.
00:11:48.210 --> 00:11:54.100 And I think that I heard over the weekend it was an apropos statement there's a lot of evil out there.
00:11:54.100 --> 00:11:57.688 We see it in Iran, we see it in Russia, we see it in North Korea.
00:11:57.688 --> 00:11:59.493 We see it with terrorists.
00:11:59.493 --> 00:12:01.081 We see it, you know, we see it.
00:12:01.081 --> 00:12:06.394 And unfortunately, the united states is the last of the strong beacons out there.
00:12:06.394 --> 00:12:10.432 Britain's not strong anymore, france is weak, canada is weak.
00:12:10.432 --> 00:12:19.464 You know the idea of that woke politics has got in there, that we should not invest in our military because we know it just looks bad and we look like a warmongering nations.
00:12:19.464 --> 00:12:27.326 But evil doesn't go away and we have a new evil in this world and they're getting stronger.
00:12:27.326 --> 00:12:32.087 And why would we want the sacrifices made on this?
00:12:32.148 --> 00:12:35.094 Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, whatever you want to call it?
00:12:35.094 --> 00:12:40.972 Today should be a day where we should understand why they sacrificed themselves.
00:12:40.972 --> 00:12:52.913 Why today, many of these veterans are living with physical ailments, psychological ailments, PTSD like you can't imagine, and there's no financial abilities for a lot of them.
00:12:52.913 --> 00:12:56.345 And yet what do we do, Stuart, as a nation?
00:12:56.345 --> 00:13:00.793 We spit on them, we completely denigrate them.
00:13:00.793 --> 00:13:03.205 We don't believe that what they've done was right.
00:13:03.205 --> 00:13:13.807 The lack of understanding because of school system, because politicians have decided that woke politics makes more sense and we're going to teach people that it's wrong.
00:13:13.807 --> 00:13:21.164 Of course war is wrong, but words do not matter to the people who embrace evil.
00:13:21.164 --> 00:13:31.390 And we have to deal with that in our lifetime and, unfortunately, if we're not careful, those sacrifices made by the generations before us will have gone for naught.
00:13:32.559 --> 00:13:38.133 David, I think we should just take a moment while we wrap up this broadcast.
00:13:38.133 --> 00:13:47.034 I guess it's a little after 11, after 11, but at noon, noon, at 12, 13, 45.
00:13:58.381 --> 00:14:02.948 All right, guys, and that's a wrap for today's episode of Hugh Sayful in your Eyes and your Time.
00:14:03.660 --> 00:14:12.173 It's been a real pleasure sharing this thought as many others in this discussion, as your support means the world to us, please like us, please follow us, please subscribe.
00:14:12.759 --> 00:14:23.144 The holy grails of all the social media lights want to take away us from your feed because, frankly, we're just giving you something that the mainstream media just doesn't want you to know.
00:14:23.144 --> 00:14:32.311 Every Monday, wednesday, friday, noon, easter, stay connected on social media, stay on our website and, as I said, grab us live every single week.
00:14:32.311 --> 00:14:35.389 David, your time is also invaluable to me.
00:14:35.389 --> 00:14:42.385 I want to say thank you for the three and a half, going on to four years at the beginning of this year.
00:14:43.067 --> 00:14:50.188 So, david, Looking forward to getting this with Stuart, and to those who have served and those who have their service.
00:14:50.188 --> 00:14:54.072 I promise you, from Stuart and myself, we will not forget.
